Jeff wrote and self-published this book in 2010, and for him it was truly a labor of love. Since his first winter in Yellowstone in 1978-1979, Jeff has been more than passionate about his favorite season of the year in his favorite place in the world.
Snowshoes, Coaches and Cross Country Skis is also an expression of Jeff's love of history, especially for the history of the Yellowstone area. The book is organized with a chapter about each segment of Yellowstone's evolution, with early chapters going back to the area's geologic origins and progressing from there through eras prior to the arrival of European settlers. Included is a chapter about ice ages of tens of thousands of years ago, which is followed by a chapter describing the arrival of the first Native Americans and the lifeways they developed in the area. Those chapters are followed in turn by others about the arrival of the fabled mountain men of the early 19th century, the gold prospectors who came after the mountain men, and then the appearance of the official government explorers who came later still. The book continues through the evolution of Yellowstone as a park, right up to the controversies of the present day about how Yellowstone should be experienced by contemporary winter visitors.
Snowshoes, Coaches and Cross Country Skis is lavishly illustrated with Jeff's beautiful winter photography of Yellowstone, as well as by artwork from some of the West's most famous artists. It is further illustrated with a great many rare historic photographs from Yellowstone's earlier days. Jeff located these historic photos through his own exhaustive research, and procured the necessary permissions to reproduce them in this book.
