Jeff drew on the winter survival skills he's learned from his lifelong love affair with snow and cold weather when he wrote Survive:  Snow Country in 2016. Much of Jeff's experience with wintry conditions has come from the 40 plus years he has spent in Yellowstone National Park, an area justifiably famous for its winters that are extraordinarily long, severely cold, and which feature awesomely deep snowpacks. During the winters Jeff has spent in Yellowstone he has worked as a tour guide, a park ranger, and as a wildlife researcher, but of these and other jobs his favorite by far has been working as a winter caretaker responsible for looking after the welfare of various park properties. Jeff's biggest responsibility as a caretaker in Yellowstone, a position locally known as "winterkeeper," has been to remove crushing snowloads from the roofs of the historic park structures in his charge, which snow removal work he has done with unbridled enthusiasm since the winter of 1978-1979.

Survive:  Snow Country was published by Globe Pequot Press, and it was designed in small format so that it can be slipped into a pocket or pack and easily carried in the backcountry on a wintry adventure. The book contains invaluable information on how to build a fire in challenging conditions, how to travel safely by snowmobile, snowshoes, or cross country skis across a deep snow environment, how to camp in snowy, frigid conditions, and much more. There is even a chapter on how to safely clear snow from a roof!

The book is well illustrated by Jeff's outstanding winter photography, as well as with informative charts and graphs.
